Review: Hotel R de Paris

This little designer four-star hotel opened in december 2013 in the heart of the 9th arrondissement. The address is still confidential, but this spring the clientele is already very international (Americans, Germans, Asians…).

The hotel’s location on 41, rue de Clichy is a very good one, just a stone’s throw from Montmartre, the grands boulevards and the Opera – it is possible to walk to the Louvre in about 20 minutes. The « Liège » subway station on the 13 train is two minutes away and you have to walk just a little bit further to catch the 2 and 13 trains on place de Clichy. The Saint-Lazare railway station is 300 meters away.

The neighborhood is quiet and has a village feel to it, though close to the high places of Parisian entertainment: Casino de Paris, Comédie de Paris, Théâtre Mogador, Folies Bergères… ! Clichy is isolated from the great tourist attractions and it’s a good way to immerse yourself in the everyday cocky Paris! A special distinction for the warm welcome of the owner of the Estaminet, 2, rue de Liège, on the corner of the rue de Clichy, a small recently renovated joint, whose regulars say goodbye to you when you leave as if you always had been one of them.

The hotel is a nice place to stay for tourists, strollers or businessmen. It is spick and span, and carefully decorated with neutral shades of white, grey and beige. Its discreet entrance and perfectly noiseless elevator lead to as much as five floors.

We booked our one-night stay there, after the Rolling Stones concert at the Stade de France, via VeryChic, at a very good price considering the quality and location of the hotel.

The reception isn’t nearly as cold and distant as in many Parisian hotels and the staff is friendly and responsive. Indeed, we had booked two double bedrooms and asked VeryChic to get one of them with twin beds. However, when we checked in, it appeared that this request hadn’t been forwarded to the hotel, because we got two bedrooms with kingsize beds. Never mind! The staff immediately upgraded one of the two bedrooms, so that we could have twin beds as planned.

The rooms are Parisian-sized (you can’t ride a bicycle around the bed, to put it flatly), but I’ve seen worse! A noteworthy detail: the oakwood floor, a nice change from the usual not-so-hygienic carpeting. The equipment is very good: the bedding is irreproachable, toilets in a separate room from the bathroom, mini-bar, complimentary snacks, flat-screen TV, designer phone and state-of-the-art iPhone dock.

The bathroom is entirely tiled in elegant tones of grey – it is full of light and practical, with a huge mirror. The rain shower is roomy and you can have a little chromotherapy if you’re an enthusiast! The cosmetics are Eau d’Orange verte by Hermès.

The breakfast are served at the entrance of the hotel in a light-filled room and are much more abundant than in other four-star Parisian hotels, which is a good surprise! Fresh fruit, hot dishes, cheese and charcuterie plates, fresh pastries… The staff is careful not to let anything run out, so you’ll never wait long for your orange juice!

To put it briefly :

The  :

  • The location.
  • Customized welcome, efficient desk staff (cab calling, various practical informations…)
  • Breakfast!
  • A new « wellness-area » (gym, sauna, hammam).
  • Great soundproofing.
  • A locked room where you can leave your luggage.

The   (trifles…):

  • The common bathroom on level -1 should have a hand-drier or paper towels instead of one big not so hygienic towel.
  • A member of the staff crossing the lobby with a huge garbage bag, oops!
  • No full-length mirrors in the bedrooms and French windows that don’t open,
  • The iPhone docks are only compatible with the iPhone 5.

All in all, a charming little place to discover and to recommend!
